Quake

so one of the best games of all time -

but I played it on coop, and the original vanilla coop (or any rendition of it for that matter) is pretty shit. you just get infinite respawns and theres no penalty for dying and theres no challenge
so you just keep roaming around the maps until you win, fine whatever i'll still enjoy it anyway (Quake: Tourguide mode)

the original 4 episodes (Played on HARD mode):
brilliant atmosphere, sound design, music (NIN), i like the graphics a lot, the movement physics (ice rink+race car) never get old and always feel unique. you always know the feeling of quake. everything has so much momentum and weight behind it that its a blast to play and even maneuver. the enemy designs are classic and unforgettable. some levels the pacing gets fucked up and you walk around wondering what to do next so thats the only painful part. other than that the pacing is awesome.  The bosses are ok, first boss is the most memorable to me, Shub niggurath is kind of a letdown but still cool, story is also pretty badass and the small satanic / religious hints in the imagery is really spooky and cool (Pentagram of protection, 666)

8/10

(like I said, i played it in coop, which is far less than perfect. it might even be a 7/10 on the coop mode, but i'm giving it an 8 as a full package. the single player is undoubtably like, 9/10 or higher)

Quake Mission Pack 1: Scourge of Armagon (coop) - (Hard mode)
so, NOT developed by ID, its basically a fan mod but it got ID's approval and stamp of quality so i'll roll with it. the level design and technology is noticably more advanced and technical than the first game. you have so many weird and obscure traps and rotating objects that even in 2016 it's still a marvel to stop and look at. some parts are truly otherworldy and incredible. the atmosphere is still there from the base game, but overall the levels are worse for me. theres a lot more gimmicky parts with switches and bridges and all that sort of crap (and more level based scripted areas for that matter) its not really a bad thing, i just prefer the original level designs of course. the new guns are fun, especially the lazer gun. the new enemies are really cool but FUCK the homing mine bullshit that instagibs you from meters away. the fucking gremlin that steals your weapons is HILARIOUS and awesome.

The last boss is a fucking let down though! i don't know if it was the coop mode or something, but Armagon is a real PUSS. you can fucking stunlock him and he literally wont fight back and you win in like 20 seconds. Pathetic. on single player its probably not as much of a pushover, but still what a let down. Oh yeah, and the entire expansion is like, 3 hours long. Beat it in one sitting, so theres that.

7/10

Quake Mission Pack 2:  Dissolution of Eternity
developed by yet another company, showing even different and eccentric mechanics and gameplay. Also played in coop, and we found this one mainly really grueling and NOT fun. The difficulty in general is ramped up, but its mostly bullshit forced difficulty "artifical". There seemed to be more wandering around the maps endlessly looking for that one scripted place we had to activate or dying over & over standing on tiny platforms being ambushed by 20 enemies at once. Just in general did not have as much of a good time with this one. Atleast it had more boss fights, so thats the highlight i guess.

5/10

All of these would probably get a higher score if played on singleplayer as the coop seems a huge afterthought.
